      The State Data Center program of the U.S. Census Bureau began officially in 1978. At present, there are representative organizations in all states and most U.S. territories. Indiana's Data Center program, established through the State Library, served as the nation's pilot program beginning in 1976. It has served as a point of contact for data about Indiana since then. The State Data Center answers data requests and provides technical assistance for state agencies, universities, libraries, local planning agencies, small business development centers, non-government organizations, and the public.
