Shadowing algorithm investors and an insight into government bonds and sharesWhilst at UBS, I shadowing my supervisors. I was able to learn about the uses of government bonds and shares. With my supervisors, they dealt with government bonds such as guns and machineries. Their role was to create algorithms to automatically get into the market at when the price is low and leave before its about to fall. Therefore, they never physically speculate the market because the algorithm would know when to enter. Show less

      Waiter and Bartender

Role: WaiterWhen working as a waiter, I had to provide excellent customer service to ensure satisfaction. This was achieved by greeting and seating customers to their table, taking customer orders and delivering food and beverages in a timely fashion. Furthermore, it required making menu recommendations, answering questions and sharing additional information upon request. The skills I’ve improved from being a waiter are communication skills, multi-tasking skills and teamworking skills. Communication skills were used effectively when communicating with the kitchen staff to make sure the orders were accurate and delivered promptly. As well as this, communication with my colleagues was also key in order for us to work efficiently together. Multitasking skills were used when taking in many dishes at once as well as listening to the customer’s enquiry etc “Can I get the bill” or “Can I get a glass of water”. Team working skills were used in general in order to provide the best service possible to the customers. Role: BartenderWhen working as a bartender, I had to prepare for alcohol and non-alcohol beverages. This required time management skills as I had to prioritize the drinks that take longer to make. My role was also to wash the cups when it became less busy. Show less

    • Avondale Construction Limited

      Jul 2017 - Aug 2017
      3D Designer

I chose Avondale Construction as part of my two-week work experience during the summer after year 12. Consequently, I was asked to convert two-dimensional design drawings for a new welfare facility at the prestigious 22 Bishopsgate project into a three-dimensional format with the aid of the Trimble Sketchup. The tasks were so exciting that I completed them fast enough for my supervisor to question my abilities. As they were reviewing my designs, they thought it was high quality, resulting to being used in an internal briefing to aid design comprehension among fellow employees.I was considered an asset to the Avondale team during my work experience, and as a result was offered paid work for my summer break. Carrying on with creating the 3D Construction models, I completed 9 more submissions in which, two were high profile welfare facility tenders. The client’s team praised my work during the post- tender review. Show less

      Equity Analyst

I worked in the equities department to understand and learn how the firm is able to decide whether to buy or sell a financial asset. As well as this, I've also gained an insight into the different types of roles within the financial industry such as Research Analysts, Product Strategist, Portfolio Manager, and Investment Stewardship. This has helped me by allowing me to know which role interests me the most. Chosen out of over 600 applicants to be one of the 120 students taking part in this program. Show less

      Academy Of Enterprise

The Academy Of Enterprise gave me the opportunity to experience how it would be to run an enterprise with a team. This opportunity was allocated with only 60 students being accepted out of 500 applications. We were given only a week to prepare, buy and sell a product to create try create a profit margin in Spitafield Market and Wework. At the end of the week, we had to pitch our product to senior members of Normua in order for them to decide on the best performed group. From this experience, i improved my marketing skills by being able to attract customers and sell them our product through telling a story behind the company brand. As well as this, was complimented by customers on the way I pitched and persuaded the customer in buying the product. My presentation pitching skills have also improved as I've learnt by pausing, it ensures that only relevant information is spoken. Show less

      Marketing Competition

Vodaphone decided to set a challenge by asking young students to innovatively think of new ideas in ways they could market their new product to increase Its social awareness. They asked us because we consume social media platforms. Therefore, we would be aware of ways to increase brand recognition. At first, there were 10 groups of 8 in a team, which we were all given two days to prepare for a one-page proposal and a presentation for our marketing idea. This would be based on a confidential brief given by Vodaphone. After the two days, it would have to be submitted to the judges for them to pick only 5 groups to progress onto the next stage. The chosen 5 groups would then have to present to the senior members of Vodaphone. I saw this as an opportunity to increase my exposure to a well-known company. I was the team driver of my group by first aiming to brainstorm innovate ideas from every individual in the group. I decided to take on this role because I personally thought of myself as a creative thinker and a confident speaker. Therefore, this would help to bring out positive vibes of the team through thinking outside the box. I was also a good team member through being able to understand when to speak and listen, giving everyone a chance to give an input in order to come to a team judgement. This helped to ensure no one was feeling left out or ignored. I understood that we were all working towards the same objectives and goals. To conclude the teamwork on behalf of my group, we worked well by allocating a task to each individual, which were all completed to the best of our abilities. The outcome was us being able to become the winner of the marketing challenge. This was due to our presentation being very clear through using backed up facts and figures as well as also having a contiguous plan. This experience helped to develop my personal skills. Thank you Vodaphone for the opportunity. Show less

Insight into Green Financing with BNP Paribas

I attended a Finance event hosted by BNP Paribas. The topic was based on Green Financing. Currently, the problem with finance is there are huge investments in commodities such as gas, but not enough in green bonds. Although people are making a profitable return on the stocks they’ve invested, it’s not providing any benefits to our economy. As a world, we all play a part in ways we can make the world sustainable.Additional Challenges:The focus between green technology and macroeconomics objectives. For example, the use of protectionism put pressure and concerns the difficulty of allowing international companies to invest in assets.Bangladesh is suffering from 150 years of pollution from 150 developing countries. Therefore, it’s time for green bank marketing to start! Through this market, the relationship between money invested in the environment and the benefits provided will have a positive correlation. Let’s all think of ways we can change our actions in order to make our world sustainable for the future!I would like to thank BNP Paribas for the insightful event along with 14 other companies who gave their values regarding sustainability Show less

      University Business Challenge

I was part of The Universities Business Challenge since October 2018. It's a challenge supported by many universities and employers. We made it into the semi-finals but, not into the grand finals. Regardless, it was an amazing experience in being able to set up a business. It was designed around weekly business simulations, in which as a group, we had to make decisions e.g. How many goods should we produce based on a rapidly growing economy? It was essential that we estimated correctly, which was achieved through constructive thinking and intensive group discussions. All of our ideas were equally as important as it was a partnership business. Therefore, I learnt to balance between negotiating and compromising in order to progress forward.Overall, the challenge was enjoyable and has made me financially aware of the struggles in setting up a business Show less

      Insight into ICAEW Qualification

I went to the Chartered Accountants Hall in Moorgate for an ICAEW Careers Event. The event was interesting as I was able to learn about the benefits of being a Chartered Accountant with ICAEW. I was also able to hear the thoughts from a line of panellists regarding their job role. The panellists were from different companies in different areas of Accountancy. I was given the chance to ask about enquires that I had. e.g.1) What do you like and dislike about your job? 2)What is the work life balance as an accountant? To conclude, I was able to gain a deeper insight into accounting by being able to speak to different professionals within their field e.g. Auditors, Tax specialist. This has given me a realistic view of the difference types of accounting roles. Show less

    • AIG

Insight into leadership skills with AIG

I was given the opportunity to attend AIG’s ‘Leading with Invention’.It was interesting to explore "the characteristics that make a good leader”. As well as this, learning new ways to give feedback and experiencing new methods of viewing team projects was very insightful.I believe the main characteristics which make a leader are:1) Someone who is able to bring the best out in people. This can be achieved by figuring out people’s strengths and learning to appreciate it. After, using their skill set to strengthen the team, whilst also helping the member build upon its strength by giving constructive feedback with a challenge.E.g. “I really like how you did this but, have you tried viewing it from this perspective?”2) A leader who doesn’t feel it's their role is to command their team, but instead to guide the team in a positive manner and aim to build on ideas as a group, giving advice where appropriate but listening carefully to their team's input. In a nutshell, good leadership is about understanding that the role requires you to bring positive energy to the team, ensuring all ideas are listened to and engaged with, resulting to a team with integrity, that enjoy what they're doing and ultimately are successful in their goals. Student Assistant in China

During my trip to China, I was given the opportunity to support students in Baoxian Middle School. It was a great experience, as I’ve always wondered how schools in China were. I was able to experience in participating with the morning routine exercises, which was something very new. Furthermore, I was also given the opportunity to deliver a presentation to the students, giving them an insight into my university life and the experiences I’ve been through, as well as helping them individually with any questions they had for me. It was a worthwhile experience, as it made me realise the differences between how schools are in the UK in comparison to China. They had loads of well-known inspirational people, with their quotes displayed e.g. Mark Zuckerberg. This has therefore, resulted me to also leave one advice for the students in Baoxian Middle school. I highly support in embracing change within your life. If you do, you could possibly find a new potential skillset that you never thought you’ll be good at. Show less

Insight into Finance/ Research and Development

During my trip to Taiwan, I was fortunate to have a two-day work experience in the company Beko, which is one of the brands owned by the Arçelik A.Ş. It was interesting in being able to get an insight into how the business functioned. Beko in Taiwan is a small department, which only operates for the research, development, purchasing and sourcing side of the business. Its main headquarters is based in Turkey. It was intriguing to understand the importance of communication between the departments (Research & Development) (Purchasing& Sourcing). As well as, being able to have an insight into how they conduct research. They do research into components such as Cloud payment, IOT and the development of AI for instance. In a nutshell, the role of Beko in Taiwan is to select components, which they'll use for their products.Afterward, they'll pass on the testing and assembling role for its main HQ back in Turkey. As well as this, I also got an insight into the finance department, which has allowed me to build a broad knowledge of the company. The experience was worthwhile! Show less

    • Charles Tyrwhitt

      CEO of Charles Tyrwhitt

The insight at Charles Tyrwhitt was amazing. I was able to understand how the company turned an innovative idea into a physical product. I also learnt the importance of departments liaising with each other as their roles inter-linked. It was very nice to have an in-depth insight from the head of each department. The most fascinating opportunity was being able to speak to the CEO himself, Nicholas Wheeler. He is an outgoing, passionate and energetic person. I was able to question him1) What features contribute to Charles Tyrwhitt Success? 2) Have you ever thought of designing shirts for men to be a saturated market? I was left with the idea“If you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will”Also, Charles Tyrwhitt success is built upon its company values1) Be the boss2) Be the customer3) Be the best I also strongly agree with these values. BCBF Alumni

I would like to exclaim how proud I am of the BCBF 2019 cohort (120 students); they have clearly heeded the advice given by IntoUniversity and student alumni.I'm glad that I can relate to these interns; they are ambitious, enthusiastic and self-driven. I found the advice given from the student alumni during my cohort, to be beneficial. Therefore, I decided to give back by giving my own insight. If I was to emphasize one piece of advice, I would say get out of your comfort zone to learn new things, which will allow you to find your potential skillset. There were always things I wish I knew before starting something. Therefore, I highly encourage everyone to give up a few minutes of their time to add value to someone else. It can really make a difference. On that note, I would like to reinforce for all BCBF interns to get onto IUconnect. (For video of me speaking, please go through my previous posts) Show less

    • Winmark – the Resale Company

      Oct 2019 - Oct 2019
      CEO of Winmark

By being able to meet the CEO of Winmark, John Jeffcock it has helped to increase my confidence in reaching my goals. His event was based on “career networking all the way to CEO”. He has a very unique story, where he started off as a solider, which then decided to became an author. After he decided to pursue for an MBA which now, he is the chief executive of his company. I found the session to be beneficial, especially being able to hear from someone who has been through it himself. Furthermore, an interesting fact about his company is how it went bust four times, but due to his determination and perseverance, is the reason for where It is today. The one advice he left with was based on “The four lessons” for setting up a business. 1) Learn the rules, then play to win. 2) Look after your whole team. 3) Use all the resources you have to the best of your ability. 4) Be willing to take the pain. This advice has allowed me to understand“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” I highly support with gathering a group of individuals together, who have the same goals, drive and ambitions as you, as you'll learn a lot from each other.
