      The accelerating datafication of society constitutes challenges and opportunities for humanities research. During the summer course, we got acquainted with some of the (methodological) fundamentals of data practices in the Digital humanities. These included data collection, data preparation, data visualisation, critical data and algorithm studies, network analysis, an introduction to Python, Tableau and Gephi. After training these skills for three days, small teams worked on a hands-on case.

I focus on assessing the current digital trends and identifying tools and practices that satisfy the requirements set by stakeholders. I research the different ways in which our research communities work, and what sort of technologies they expect. In support of that I find not only viable and practical solutions, but also coordinate from start to completion the implementation of new workflows, specifically designed to tackle the most challenging sides of the business.       A collaboration between the David Jones Research Center and the Faculty of English in the University of Cambridge, Cambridge University Library, Kettle’s Yard Gallery and Cambridge Digital Humanities Learning Programme is working on digitizing and creating an open-access digital edition of the letters of the poet, artist and First World War veteran David Jones (1895-1974) to his patron Jim Ede, founder of the Kettle’s Yard Museum. The project is being funded by the Cambridge Humanities Research Grant Scheme and the U.S.-based David Jones Research Center. As volunteer, I encoded two manuscript letters in the TEI, which are displayed in the open-access platform of Cambridge Digital Library. Show less
