    • Barnes & Duncan Land Surveying, Engineering & Planning

      Apr 2013 - Aug 2013
      Project Engineer

At Barnes & Duncan I assisted with lot grade designs and lot grade verification. Projects were located in and around Winnipeg. My main responsibilities included:- Designing and drafting residential lot grading plans.- Conducting lot grade verification in the field, and documenting results.- Layout of swales and other small drainage features. Some key things I learned were:- How to use CAD software efficiently.- It's rare to have all of the data you would like to have, so it's important to be able to make inferences and judgements to fill in the gaps where data is missing. • Stantec

      Aug 2013 - Aug 2018
      Transportation Engineer in Training

At Stantec my work focused on traffic impact studies, and providing traffic engineering impact on functional and preliminary design projects. Nearly all projects were located in Manitoba, except for one in Alberta and two in British Columbia. My main responsibilities included:- Understanding the transportation and land use context in which a project was located.- Forecasting travel demand using trip generation rates from ITE and/or local references.- Analyzing transportation system performance using macroscopic analysis methods and tools, as well as warrant analyses.- Documenting study intent, assumptions, methodologies, analysis results, conclusions and recommendations in technical reports.- Creating graphics for reports and presentations.- Writing scripts to assist with repetitive and error-prone tasks.- Interacting with clients and road authorities in person and in writing.- Writing small proposals and parts of larger ones. Some key things I learned were:- It's important to have a clear idea of what the purpose of a street or road is before you identify problems or develop solutions.- The Dutch Sustainable Safety principles (functionality, homogeneity, predictability) are a very clear and helpful resource for thinking about traffic and street design problems and solutions. • Dillon Consulting Limited

      Aug 2018 - Feb 2020
      Transportation Planning Engineer

At Dillon I worked on traffic impact studies (TIS) for developments across Canada. I also provided input on a handful of policy documents, assisted with travel demand forecasting for several communities in Ontario, and developed scripts to conduct analyses on General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data.My main responsibilities included:- Completing all aspects of TIS projects, from proposals through to final deliverables and presenting results to clients and reviewing agencies.- Delegating work to junior staff, and providing input and guidance to help them complete tasks.- Managing small TIS projects. Some key things I learned were:- There are some important differences in how TIS projects are conducted in different parts of Canada, but TIS projects are essentially about quantifying and forecasting travel demand, and analyzing transportation system performance.- How to use GIS for transportation planning.- What GTFS data includes and how it can be used to gain insight into transit operations.- How travel demand models are used in Canadian municipalities.
