Sharing your wisdom, mistakes, and successes to your juniors is one of the most fulfilling tasks I have ever performed. I found that the most effective way to teach was not by giving them the answer, or pointing them towards an example/explanation online or in their textbooks. Students retained information best when it was in the form of a story. I needed to make a connection with them on a personal level by sharing my experiences in that class and establish trust as their mentor. Then not only will the student succeed, but they will come back for more. Also, some student's will come to you seeking only "the answer". Oftentimes they will react negatively if you try and "teach" them something in order to manipulate you into giving them the answer. Some students will simply will get up and leave, but that's fine. It's almost impossible to teach someone who doesn't want to learn anyway. My advice is to stick to your guns and constantly ask your students "why". "Why does it work that way? Why does that equation solve this type of problem? Can you explain to me what is really going on in this problem?" Again, many students will resist these questions designed to make them think. They will make you feel guilty. They will leave and won't come back to your tutelage. Well I say good riddance. You are a tutor not a cheat sheet. If students actually learn something from you then the good, hard working students will flock to you for advice and information. Show less

Worked with Performance Excellence Dept. on Perioperative Value Stream Analysis. I supported the facilitation of two Rapid Improvement projects focusing on decreasing turnaround times for their operating rooms. I also worked towards organization of department level data geared towards future cost-saving opportunities.During their first Kaizen event there was a large focus on operating room turnaround/cleaning. I had the privilege to perform an "Ohno Circle" (I stayed in one spot and watched the process) in the OR and watch cleaning teams perform OR turnarounds. One improvement my team picked out regarded bringing 2 bins when cleaning instead of 1. This decreased the turnaround time by an entire minute. One thing I learned about continuous improvement is that most of the improvements are small and rather simple. Employee's don't think of them because they are too busy doing their jobs (this is especially true for clinicians) and are not trained to think that way. A process engineers job is to give staff the time and tools to step back and come up with solutions for improvement. Show less
