  Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist

  • My role involved multitasking within many different areas of oncology. I acted as a patient liaison nurse, clinical manager and clinical educator, while also being a source of expert information for general nursing and medical staff within the hospital. I worked very closely with two medical oncologists within the area of the cancer patients’ diagnosis, treatment, psychological support and management of the patients palliative care needs if necessary. • I was a senior member of the oncology chemotherapy day ward team and held responsibility for the efficient running of the day oncology unit as well as cannulation, phlebotomy and administration of cytotoxic agents.• I also ran frequent oncology educational training days for general nurses within my hospital. This educational course was approved by the Irish Nursing Regulatory Body An Bord Altranais and all nurses who completed this training day were accredited with a certificate in basic oncology nursing practices.   • I was recruited by Quintiles and contracted to Pfizer Healthcare Ireland to set up its first oncology home nurse advisor service. My role incorporates the provision of education and training to all oncology healthcare professionals around Ireland, in the management of cancer patients prescribed specific Tryosine Kinase Inhibitor Anti Cancer Therapies. I have regular face to face meetings and hold organised educational sessions for clinical nurse specialists and medical oncologists on the topic of best practice therapy management for patients who may be prescribed these therapies. • I run a nationwide home nurse support service for all oncology patients who are prescribed this oral anti cancer therapy.
