The OA is a part of the Boy Scout program. Youth members are elected from Boy Scout Troops. To be eligible for induction, a Scout must have achieved the rank of First Class, spent at least 15 days and nights camping within the last two years, and gain the approval of their unit leader. Once elected, the Scout must complete their Ordeal within one year. The Ordeal is intended to emphasize service and selflessness. During the induction, candidates maintain complete silence, receive small amounts of food, work on camp improvements projects, and are required to sleep alone, apart from other campers, which teaches significant values. If the Scout succeeds in their ordeal, the Scout is then welcomed as an Ordeal member in a formal Ordeal Ceremony. Show less
