CCL28, an inflammatory protein expressed in the lining of mammalian airways, exhibits both defensin-like anti-microbial properties, and chemotactic activity. These qualities suggest a multi-functional role for the protein in inflammatory environments. As such, it presents a potential link between the response to certain respiratory bacterial infections and exacerbation of underlying conditions such as asthma. My research aimed to further investigate these possibilities using a combination of immunological research techniques, and inter-disciplinary collaboration. (clinical sampling, bioinformatics, molecular biology).Specialist laboratory skills and training included in vitro maintenance of airway inflammatory models using cell lines (A549s), assessment of signal transduction pathways via qRT-PCR and ELISA, clinical sampling, molecular analyses, microbiological culture, anti-microbial activity assays, primary human lymphocyte culture, cell separation, flow-cytometry, genetic sequence alignments and bioinformatic analyses of genetic similarity for proteins expressed across select mammalian species, investigative design, data analysis, academic writing, peer-reviewed publication. The immune response evoked during intestinal parasite infections is restrained locally by expansion of regulatory T-cells. Systemic increases in regulatory T-cell populations, as a consequence of gut parasite infection, are also associated with reduced symptoms of airway hyper-responsiveness in models of allergen-sensitisation. This research aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of helminth parasite products in resolution of airway allergy and to determine the mechanism by which resolution can occur.Specialist laboratory technique and practice included in vitro and ex vivo culture of cell lines and primary lymphocytes, helminth culture, maintaining small animal models of airway hypersensitivity and intestinal infection, cytology, pathology, cell separation, 5-colour flow-cytometry, (q)RT-PCR, DNA-gel electrophoresis, plethysmography, ELISA, investigative design, data management, analysis, protocol optimisation, academic writing, conference presentation and peer-reviewed publication. My research work has been reviewed at various conferences and symposia within the UK, Europe and the United States. Sept 2014 - now

"Mary provided private tuition for my son at Senior 1 & 2 levels of the Scottish Mathematics Curriculum. My son has number dyslexia and Mary's patience encouraged him to have confidence and gain a thorough understanding of maths. Mary's tutoring proved to be a great asset for his learning and helped him to improve, increasing his maths grades and allowing him to move up in his group by two sets. I have no hesitation in recommending Mary for maths tuition". (E. Gilhooley, Parent) Show less
