      Rural Aquaculture Promotion Volunteer

I worked with Zambia’s Department of Fisheries to improve rural livelihoods through promoting aquaculture as an activity from which farmers earn income, supplement their nutrition, and improve food security. I helped smallholder rural farmers apply new and improved aquaculture practices that sustainably increase fish production, consumption, and incomes. My primary tasks included: Increasing the quality and quantity of fish ponds, improving pond management and fish production, integrating aquaculture with other farming systems, increasing incomes, organizing fish farming groups, and establishing sustainable local fish seed production centers. I also worked on secondary projects including HIV/AIDS education, malaria education, and environmental education.• Trained and supervised 150 rural fish farmers and 7 fish farmer groups on fish pond construction and management, integrative agriculture, and business skills.• Orchestrated trainings, camps, and programs to teach nutrition, health, environmental stewardship, and women’s empowerment skills to youth and adults.• Demonstrated leadership as a short-term trainer/adviser in order to develop new training sessions and improve existing ones, develop improved objectives for the RAP project framework, and assist the trainers in effectively teaching Peace Corps trainees.• Served as a Peace Corps Volunteer of the Week for the RAP 2017 pre-service training, facilitating technical lessons and completing administrative tasks.• Administered peer support as a member of the Peer Support and Diversity Network in cooperationwith the Peace Corps staff, providing quality support in a manner that enhances the potentialand productivity of the volunteers in their service.• Drafted, received, and managed a Peace Corps Small Projects Assistance Grant for the construction of an earthen dam. Established and oversaw a community dam committee in facilitating the earthen dam project to encourage capacity building and food security. Show less
