  At this small-scale visitor farm I learnt basic animal husbandry skills and became confident in interacting with and educating the public. Daily tasks were similar to that of the Cornish Seal Sanctuary. Volunteers also helped with general maintenence around the farm.

  During this work experience role I assisted the animal care team in the daily husbandry tasks, such as preparing daily feeds and medicines, cleaning animal enclosures, feeding, providing animal enrichment and recording behavioural responses on a database. I was trained to follow health and safety when working with wild animals and biosecurity measures.

  After 3 months of unpaid work experience, I was hired as an entry-level zookeeper. This role involved:-Daily husbandry (lone responsibility) of small mammals and birds including macaws, red-handed tamarins, common marmosets, great horned owls, wallabies, pygmy goats, giant cloud rats, great crowned cranes, dik diks and more.-Cleaning and maintaining all parts of enclosures-Providing species-specific enrichment-Working with senior keepers to carry out husbandry tasks for big cats, zebra, tapirs and ostrich, following strict safety protocols-Preparing daily animal diets, carefully weighed, recorded, stored and supplemented-Following strict biosecurity practices at all times, meeting Avian Flu requirements-Engaging with members of the public and answering all questions in a friendly and informative manner-Assisting in the restraint and capture of animals, and the administration of medication when required-Assisting in enclosure maintenance and installation of new furniture Show less
