  Study of the role of PRLIP2 in plant pathogen defenceAn Arabidopsis line mutated in the gene encoding PRLIP2 has recently been identified in the host laboratory. PRLIP2 is believed to be a lipase (Jacab et al., 2003), and the mutation was found to partially rescue the double mutant pen1 syp122 from severe defence expression causing necrosis and dwarfism. Similar rescuing mutations have been shown to be defence signalling genes (Zhang et al., 2008). The prlip2-1 mutation has been crossed out from the pen1 and syp122 mutations, and is now available as a single mutant (Xie and Thordal-Christensen, unpubl.). Three T-DNA insertion prlip2 mutations, prlip2-2, prlip2-3 and prlip2-4, have been acquired as well. In the present project, I will score progress of bacterial and fungal pathogens on the prlip2 mutations, to uncover whether this gene is essential for defence expression. If this is the case, then I will perform more detail inoculation and defence expression studies to see more specifically which type of defence it is involved in. The studies have potential importance in understanding how plants protect themselves against diseases and how this can be used in crop protection. Show less
