I actually have a small lime museum which has samples of old mortars from as far back as the 12th century. One of the samples from a Somerset church is extremely soft to the touch and I have not been able to replicate this mix.If I was to make a ceiling I would make it from wood lath as this type of ceiling will last many years and will certainly outlast any plasterboard ones. The oldest structure that I have conserved has been Torre Abbey in Devon an 800 yr old structure that was taken over as a private residence in the 1600's.I personally found an old Norman mortar and pestle the bowl itself had been embedded in the rubble stone wall and in the same room I uncovered a quattrefoil (not sure of the spelling) which is a 4 leaf clover symbol with 4 other smaller symbols within the 1st line, this was on a support column facing away from a hidden medieval circular stone staircase that the architects decided they wanted to keep hidden as there was no more money to spare to expose this.In the other part of this undercroft I uncovered a medieval cobbled floor with the stones shaped like sharks teeth and embedded slanting away from you and not embedded straight as I would have expected, and I also found many pieces of floor tile some of which has skeletons in the design. In the room behind the Larvabo where the lift system was installed the archaeologists discovered 6 or 8 bodies which had been the various head monks and important members from when the building had been an Abbey.During WW2 an American army unit had been stationed there and in the Tythe barn next to the building captured Spanish sailors from the time of the failed Spanish Armada had been kept prisoner.Whilst at the Abbey I asked the site manager,Basil,if he had ever seen any ghosts.he said that during the work there was a laser security light ring around the building and whenever this was set off it was usually in the area of the buildings old church. Most of the buildings I work on are from the 1600's.
