      State Representative

I was elected to the Florida Legislature in 2004 representing West Broward. During my service in the Florida House of Representatives I served on the Education Appropriations Committee, Children and Families, Joint Administrative Procedures Committee, Education Choice and Innovation, Business Regulation and the Conference Committee for Health Care Appropriations. The most vulnerable citizens, including children with autism, foster children, and the developmentally disabled, were my priority. I sponsored legislation for a district ballot initiative for seniors and the developmentally disabled. I also led the rewrite of the state statutes in section 393 governing the Agency for Persons with Disabilities, and passed significant education legislation dealing with the developmentally disabled population. I passed legislation to increase funding for the Centers for Autism and Related Disabilities and increased the number of regional CARD Centers. A very exciting accomplishment was the passage of legislation that provides for a statewide certification for swim instructors for the developmentally disabled and securing appropriations for capital funding and operations for a therapeutic pool at the Dan Marino Center. I sponsored legislation to remove mercury from vaccines and my most recent legislation was passage of a specialty Autism License Plate in the budget. I also passed legislation to assist those who provide school transportation to our children in public schools; create community residential housing for the disabled; prevent student restraint and seclusion; establish local and statewide laws for sexual predators; create recurring sources of revenue for several populations and causes and more.
