This year’s winner established a groundbreaking event that empowered African-Americans within the LGBT community.Thousands of people of all races attended the inaugural Charlotte Black Gay Pride July 14-17, 2005. Four determined African-American activists came together to form the organization, CNCBGP, and with the help of the community, was able to hold an entire weekend of events where every aspect of the gay culture was celebrated.“CNCBGP worked hard to make sure that this weekend was inclusive on all levels,” said Jay Biles, 2006 HRC Carolinas Dinner Co-Chair. “The community, as a whole, was offered the opportunity to experience Black Gay Culture, something that had never been explored before in this region of the South. There are many LGBT African-Americans in the south that feel that there is not a place for them to fit. Although there are many organizations and even other Pride celebrations within the gay community, many African-Americans do not see their faces represented. Black Gay Pride weekend allowed LGBT African-Americans the ability to come out and to be proud of who they were in spaces that affirmed them and all LGBT citizens of Charlotte and throughout the Carolinas were the better for it.” Show less
