    • FRIENDS OF THUNDERBAY NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARY

      May 2021 - now

As a deckhand on the Lady Michigan, I was an educator, presenting information about the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Lake Huron’s rich maritime history. I assisted our captain in drifting over shipwrecks to provide a view of them to passengers through the Lady Michigan’s glass viewing wells while explaining each shipwreck’s history. In this position, I practiced proper disembarking and docking procedures, as well as U.S. Coast guard rescue procedures, and general maritime navigation skills. I worked along side other deckhands, a first mate, and a captain to provide customers and community members with a memorable and informative experience while cruising Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay. Coastal Restoration Technician

As a Coastal Restoration Technician for Huron Pines, I surveyed both public and private land for invasive and native plant and animal species using GIS and various surveying tools such as Field Maps, OnX, and Avenza. I surveyed roadsides in 4 different counties in Northeast Michigan, planted native species, harvested and began native seed collections for future plantings, removed invasive species through the methods of hand pulling and pesticide application, and used google sheets to generate spread sheets accounting for the species, severity, and exact location for future mitigation. Environmental Intern

As a Michigan Sea Grant environmental intern, I worked at Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary conducting pioneer freshwater acidification research with the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory for NOAA’s Ocean Acidification Program. In my role as an intern, I honed surface water sampling methods, prioritized developing acidification science programming for students and the general public, and fostered opportunities for community members to engage in acidification sampling.
