Trophic ecology; fish feeding experiments and stable isotopes; water quality; ecosystem metabolism; laboratory management; data analysis Planned and executed lab and field experiments on physiological rate processes of the hard clam, Mercenaria mercenaria. Measured feeding, respiration, excretion and egestion in lab and field settings, created an energy budget to be used in paired biological-hydrodynamic models of an estuarine clam aquaculture site.

Leads science and conservation programs focused on barrier island ecology relevant to coastal North Carolina. Beth's research specialties are estuarine and shellfish ecology and stakeholder-driven science. Beth and the science team are working to further develop the Conservancy’s research program and strengthen relationships with collaborators in the Cape Fear region and beyond. Leads barrier-island conservation research and monitoring programs, which include marsh creek water quality, aquifer monitoring, dune and maritime forest ecology, sea turtle conservation biology, and white-tailed deer population management.
