  • Experience

    • UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy

      Jun 2016 - Aug 2016
      Summer Research Intern

During this internship, I researched and proposed an original research project with guidance from my professor, designed and performed experiments on Russell’s Viper Venom to create a battlefield hemostat, and presented the results of research at symposium to the Dean of Pharmacology and UNC professors. This internship greatly improved my ability to critically think, design and execute experiments, and draw conclusions from those results and apply them to real-world scenarios.

    • NC State Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Engineering Lab

      Sept 2017 - May 2018
      Undergraduate Researcher

As an undergraduate researcher in the NC State University Neuromuscular Rehabilitation Engineering Lab, I assisted graduate students on rehabilitation and lower-limb prosthesis studies, and analyzed and presented analysis of subject gait patterns and subject behavior during studies. In addition, I was also trained on machines and programs such as EEG’s, EMG’s, and Vicon Motion Capture, as well as trained in the Machine Shop/Fabrication Lab on the band saw, miter saw, drill press, etc.

    • The Helping Hand Project, Inc. | NC State University

      May 2018 - May 2021
      Chief Technology Officer

The Helping Hand Project is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to designing and 3D printing upper-limb prostheses for kids with upper-limb differences. As the Chief Technology Officer of the NC State Chapter, I was in charge of maintaining the NC State Biomedical Engineering Department's printers, 3D printing all of the chapter's custom-designed prostheses, and investigating and spearheading new technologies that could improve the efficiency and quality of the organization's operations. I also trained several of our members on CAD software and design principles for 3D printing. Show less

    • Cybathlon: Pack Bionics

      Aug 2018 - May 2021
      Vice President

Cybathlon is an international competition held every 4 years in Switzerland focused on rehabilitation engineering. There are six disciplines for the competition, for which our team focused on the prosthetic leg discipline. Our team designed a leg for an amputee pilot to race in an obstacle race that mimics everyday tasks to compete against international universities and companies. As the Vice President, I was the technical lead of the design and construction of the prosthetic leg. Not only did I contribute a lot to the actual design of the leg, but I oversaw the entire project, including the mechanical design, electrical system, and control strategy for the device. After the competition, I led the efforts to start a redesign of the leg, learning from the problems faced in our first generation design. • Optum

      Jun 2019 - Aug 2019
      Technology Development Intern

The goal of this internship was to develop an application that addressed an issue within the healthcare industry. Throughout this internship, we defined and identified a problem, developed an web application to address the problem, and did multiple user tests to validate our product. As UI/UX designer and developer for our team, I not only oversaw and developed the User Interface of our application, but also guided the vision of our product. Throughout this internship, I learned how to develop the front-end of applications, design user interfaces, and validate products through user testing and interactions. Show less

    • Nanomechanics & Nanoengineering Lab | NC State University

      Sept 2019 - May 2020
Abram's Scholar | Undergraduate Research Assistant

I was awarded the Abram's Scholarship award to work as an undergraduate research assistant in this lab. This lab is working on very flexible and stretchable sensors, and I was tasked with exploring the possible biomedical applications of the lab's flexible strain gauges. Strain gauges are typically not very flexible, limiting their application to relatively small strains. I designed and conducted experiments to determine the relationship between upper-limb joint flexion and epidermal strain, and to see if we can predict joint angles based on strain gauge readings. I built analog lowpass filters to filter out 60 Hz noise, and then further processed the data with digital filters to focus the data on the strain gauge readings. I presented my findings at the end-of-year symposium to department faculty and peers. Show less

    • Teleflex Incorporated

      Jun 2020 - Aug 2020
Surgical Research and Development Laboratory Assistant

During my time as an intern in Teleflex's Surgical R&D Department, I developed and validated work instructions and test methods for use of laboratory equipment and testing surgical tools and products. In order to keep track of these methods, I used Agile for document control to keep track of document changes and bring new test methods to production. Using these test methods, I also collected and analyzed data to optimize Hem-o-lok clips to reduce clip failure rates during surgeries. Furthermore, I designed fixtures for lab equipment to enable and improve the investigation of product development, specifically designing a fixture to analyze ligation clips under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Utilizing the knowledge of manufacturing & automation processes and techniques I learned from this experience, I was able to contribute to improving the departments products. Show less

    • North Carolina State University

      Oct 2020 - May 2021
      3D Printer Manager

Maintained the 3D printing space for the NC State University Biomedical Engineering Department, making sure the space was clean, organized, and usable. I also maintained the 3D printers within the space, performing routine maintenance and fixing/repairing/replacing broken or worn parts. Clubs and organizations within the department, as well as graduate students, used that space.

    • Asensus Surgical

      May 2021 - Aug 2021
      Mechanical Engineering Intern

Worked as a Mechanical Engineering Design Intern, designing various parts used across the surgical robotic system. I worked on and contributed designs to the following subsystems.1) I designed a next-generation, surgeon-interfacing, prismatic robotic arm joint, resulting in a design that will be used in future prototypes with low inertia, very low friction, zero backlash, high smoothness, and high back-drivability.2) I developed a testbench for testing the designed robotic joint, implementing power supplies, PLCs, motor controllers, and code to measure friction and implement gravity compensation. This testbench will be further developed and used for testing future prototypes.3) I led the design of a cybersecurity back cover for a surgical data collection machine that will be deployed in the field.4) Designed a frame for a frameless motor to calibrate the motor before its use in future prototypes. In order to be selected, I had to have outstanding academic performance, ingenuity, and participation in research-related activities. Because of my success as an undergraduate student, I was nominated by the Undergraduate Affairs Committee of the Biomedical Engineering Department to compete nationally for this scholarship. For this prestigious nomination, I was the only student chosen out of the BME program's 160+ students based on merit and accomplishments during my time as an undergraduate. After this nomination, I competed against the smartest and brightest from NC State's College of Engineering and was selected out of the 2200+ possible students. Because I was chosen as a recipient for this scholarship, I will be invited to Washington, D.C. to present my work as well as meet astronauts and some of the smartest and hardest-working people in the country.
