  As phytosanitary risk analyst I was mainly involved in performing pest risk analysis, drafting import conditions for plants and plant products and monitoring compliance at quarantine facilities. The aim was to reduce the likelihood of introduction of quarantine pests into South Africa. My responsibilities included:• Negotiations with importers, exporters and quarantine staff from other countries;• Participation in national, regional and international standard drafting processes;• Representation at local conferences; • Monitoring of quarantine facilities; and• Managing interceptions at ports of entry.I soon started a database, recording the organisms assessed, their main characteristics, quarantine status, reasons for decision taken etc. This database became a powerful tool used to speed up risk analysis and to ensure consistent decision making. As my experience grew and I demonstrated the ability to take fast consistent decisions, I was tasked with taking responsibility for interceptions at the ports of entry. Dealing with non-compliant importers exposed me to dealing with demanding interpersonal situations. Two highlights from this career:• I represented South Africa at an international standards drafting committee in the Netherlands and Germany; and• I gave a presentation on ‘Phytosanitary risk analysis in South Africa’, at an International Conference held in USA.
