      Sept 2004 - Jul 2007
      BSc Biological Sciences Student

I began my University scientific career by undertaking a BSc in Biological Sciences at the University of Birmingham in 2004. This course was comprised over a large array of modules over the breadth of the biological sciences (immunology, molecular biology, evolution, animal and plant biology, cell biology etc.). These modules were assessed by written and practical coursework components, written examinations, oral presentations, as well as scientific report and essay writing. By undertaking a laboratory-based research project and dissertation in the final year of my course, this promoted my interest in the field of scientific research. I obtained an Honours degree, meaning that I successfully passed all modules taken over the course of the 3 year degree. Show less

    • Severn Trent Water

      Dec 2007 - Aug 2009
      Analytical Chemist

      • I gained knowledge and experience in a variety of chemical analyses of waste water samples, such as Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and testing for volatile matter, whilst working in a well renowned environmentally-based testing company. • I gained experience in training new staff on scientific analyses, methods and protocols.• I developed excellent team-working skills, such as demonstrating and bringing forward ideas on how to improve health and safety issues within the company.

    • University of Birmingham

      Sept 2009 - Sept 2010
      Masters Molecular Biology Research Student

I carried out a Masters (MRes) degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology between 2009 and 2010. During this degree I carried out two extended laboratory projects, which were on the subject of periplasmic release methods and DNA binding proteins respectively. During these projects, I designed experiments in conjunction with my supervisors and carried out experiments in order to gain novel and exciting data. These projects were written up as dissertations, and were assessed via viva, poster presentations and oral presentations at the University.I also carried out extensive modules on molecular biology techniques, grant writing applications and chemical health and safety. • Aston University

      Oct 2010 - Dec 2013
      PhD Research Student

I completed my PhD at Aston University which specialised in developing novel liposome vaccine delivery systems against tuberculosis, which was supervised by Professor Yvonne Perrie. My project focussed on the formulation, development and optimisation of cationic liposome vaccine delivery systems. I used liposome formulation techniques such as the lipid hydration method, DRV method, double emulsion method as well as microfluidics. These nanoparticles were then characterised in terms of their size, zeta potential, PDI and stability which was measured using the Malvern Zetasizer Nano-ZS. Novel vaccine formulations were also tested for their ability to load TB antigens, as well as their in vivo biodistribution (using novel radiolabelling) and immunological efficacy (tested by ELISAs and proliferation assays). Novel studies also focussed on chemical synthesis of lipid conjugates. Show less

      Jan 2013 - Mar 2013
      Visiting PhD Student

During the final year of my PhD I have spent 2 separate periods working at SSI (January and March 2013). Whilst here I carried out vaccine studies and experiments as part of my thesis. These experiments were designed in collaboration with my associate supervisor and researchers at SSI.I also learned new techniques which have been applied to my research, such as the high shear mixing method which was used in liposome formulation..

      Scientist III/ Bioanalyst

Work has focussed on the formulation development of pharmaceutical therapies against airways related diseases. Also I have carried out the method transfer and validation of bioanalytical methodolody. I am currently working on and specialising in bioassay method development.I have gained further experience in biologics, airways related diseases, ELISA, spray drying, aerosol performance testing (NGI and ED), UV, HPLC, isoelectric focussing (iCE), FT-IR and DLS. I have been a protocol lead for a number of important studies culminating in carrying out presentations at team meetings and data reviews and project management meetings.I have attended several courses during my time at Vectura including on spray drying and atomisation of formulations and statistical and data analysis of bioassays.
