      Volunteer, Officer

Medical and Dental Global Brigades Community Outreach, PanamaI recently completed an amazing volunteer experience with the Global Medical Brigades organization in the country of Panama. I traveled to small villages assisting doctors in providing health education and wellness exams. The education for the communities we were serving focused on oral hygiene as that is one of the most common issues that plague underserved communities. We educated the community by creating infographics, demonstrating simple techniques, and speaking to them in Spanish about the importance of brushing and flossing teeth. In addition, I explained that different types of foods affect teeth more severely than others and that keeping a healthy diet is important whenever possible. While the doctors diagnosed and treated the patients, I was able to observe and glean some knowledge about these issues that are so prevalent in developing and remote communities, including how doctors go about treating them and the limited resources the villagers have access to. Along with oral hygiene, parasites, and unhealthy lifestyles were topics discussed because of the disproportionate risks they pose to communities that have limited access to healthcare. Educating people on how to avoid common health risks and maintain a healthy lifestyle was the most impactful part of the program because it can reduce the need to seek medical attention and empower communities to thrive.
