  Casket Store Group

  I started the "Casket Store Group" while still in college at Tulane. After I experienced how costly funerals can be, I discovered that a loophole in federal regulations allowed consumers to purchase their casket from anywhere - it doesn't have to come from the funeral home. This project became the leading direct to consumer retailer of funeral caskets in the southeast and a leader in specialty Veterans and themed burial caskets. We operated several websites which offered burial caskets direct to the public through "local" casket stores. The distribution of the caskets was centered in Nashville, Tennessee. Most of the population of the US could be served within 48 hours. The caskets were manufactured in China, which allowed us to retail the caskets for less than the wholesale cost of a domestic casket. Eventually, we began to produce some of our high end caskets at a cluster of plants in Middle Tennessee. I closed this project down after 5 years as many competitors entered the market, cutting the margins on caskets sold. Additionally, rising cremation rates made the demand for caskets significantly lower in 2015 than 2011. I continue to work on projects in the funeral/cemetery/cremation space from time to time. I worked with a team of registered architects, engineers, estimators and project managers to monitor and influence our internal rate of return on projects from beginning to end in the design/build process. I worked with the managing partner to set weekly and monthly production/revenue targets for the field construction crews. I was responsible for all bookkeeping for ~$2.5m annual revenue and project costs. I prepared our financial reports which were subject to independent audit. I evaluated estimates vs. actual costs incurred, planned capital outlays based on our estimated costs to complete and manage subcontractor contracts. I managed progress billings and collections for the firm - preparing AIA progress billing, submitting for architect certification, collecting from private clients, governmental and non government agencies.
