  As a Detective Sergeant on the National Crime Squad (NCS) Derek was a member of a pioneering squad that tackled the most serious and organised criminals and groups engaged in Drug Trafficking and serious crimes affecting National Security. Derek was a team leader where authorised sensitive surveillance and investigation techniques were commonly utilised to gain intelligence and evidence to secure success. Being involved at strategic planning, implementing tactics and leading the operational team was demanding and rewarding. Derek was also a member of the NCS armed surveillance team that responded to investigations where armed surveillance was deemed necessary.The NCS was the forerunner of todays Serious Crime Agency.   This was a challenging environment at the cutting edge of criminal investigation techniques, encompassing new legislation and procedures specifically designed to recognise and assist the investigation of terrorist activity Derek was instrumental in setting up the investigation team and dedicated surveillance wing to form part of the Midlands Region Counter Terrorist Unit that would evolve to become part of the UK counter terrorist network. As the Detective Inspector Derek supervised a team of Detectives comprising elements of Special Branch, Security Service and Military Intelligence together with specialised surveillance, technical support and financial investigation teams, to combat the threat of terrorism both in the UK and abroad. Derek was the lead and Senior Investigator for numerous complex and protracted investigations that culminated in the successful convictions of principal terrorist suspects. Show less
