Schools Everywhere
Sept 2016 - nowGuest TeacherAs John Whitehead writes, "Children are the messages we send to a time we will never see." Being a "guest teacher" is how I currently choose to make my mark on that message to the future. Gone are the days of wanting to reign full-time over a classroom of my own; I prefer being a guest teacher in another teacher’s classroom. I have a new-found love for subbing! I love the young children who are eager to learn, and I love helping those who are struggling to understand. I love telling stories to this wonderful, forgiving audience who even laugh at my jokes. I love teaching high school students, the ones on the cusp of young adulthood, who challenge what I say and by so doing teach me as much as I teach them. The TOP TEN reasons why I LOVE substitute teaching: 10. Short work days – typically 7:45 am – 3:45 pm which includes at least an hour for lunch and teacher plan time, 9. Every night, weekend and summer off, 8. Never boring - it can be as frustrating as herding cats, as scary as bungee jumping, or as much fun as the best parts of being a parent - but it is never boring, 7. No lesson plans to write – no pressure over mandatory testing and State Standards, 6. Varied activity – one day I can be teaching a kindergarten class how to count, the next day I might be guiding high school seniors through algebra or playing kickball in a PE class with middle schoolers! 5. Top-notch work environment – generally, the school staff are friendly, warm professionals, 4. Social interaction – this is a dream job for a social person like me, 3. Job availability – it can be as part-time or full-time as I want it to be AND I can teach whether I’m in Nebraska or Arizona, 2. Time flexibility – don’t feel like working today? I can just say “no thank you”, and 1. I can continue to make an impact! Subbing is my way of interacting with the future. Show less
