  Project 'Mathematician'

  I complied tables of results, using a program called Quadvent, in the DSEAR Ammonia Safety Guide, which is to be published in 2018. The tables were based on ammonia leakage in work spaces and the effect of ventilation on the explosiveness of the gas cloud; these were then colour coded to show the safety level of the parameters in each cell.

  This set length consulting program started with 4-months of full day training in Tableau and Alteryx, as well as other data and consulting related skills. During this training period the cohort worked on 8 week-long projects delivering presentations on the Friday after being briefed on the Monday. After the training came four 6-month placements into a range of industries and positions (see other experience for more details of the individual placements), which gave me a huge amount of experience with data use across multiple companies and exposure to different ways of working.   My first 6 month placement as a consultant was with Solar Turbines. My role was predominantly automating an Excel report by using Alteryx, as well as tidying up and displaying data feeding into and coming out of the report. Before my placement with Solar Turbines the Excel report took an Environmental Engineer around 10 weeks to do every year, with Alteryx workflows that I created the report now runs every evening (taking around 30 seconds) and feeds into Tableau dashboards created to give the engineers the tools for self serving analytics on the information produced by the report, something that was previously not possible.   My second placement as a consultant is with PwC. This role involves being the Tableau and Alteryx specialist within the Digital Team of the BRS (Business Recovery Services). This then leads to helping with many different financial based projects ranging from pitches to reports, a long running project of creating a debt repayment model using Alteryx, moving away from the Excel model currently in use, and answering ad hoc help desk style queries. As well as the projects I have set up a weekly Alteryx session for the team which I work with on the debt repayment model; the sessions are open to the team of 130 people and each week I run through a use case of Alteryx within their work or a lesson on a specific tool, with the idea that the team can then take these skills away and still have me as a point of contact if they need extra help.
