Student consultant for Transparency International on asset recovery

For 4 months, our team consisting of 15 International Studies students has worked on a real-life consultancy project on the process of asset recovery for victims of corruption. Tasks included researching, data gathering and writing to provide the client with valuable practical recommendations based on solid scientific research and to seek new strategies to incorporate victims of corruption in the process of asset recovery. This included research of a more detailed and evidence-based definition of victimhood as well as the assessment of different approaches to the remediation of victims with the aim of incorporating these in the process. The latter also involves identifying potential partnerships, actors, networks, policies and specific areas in which victim participation in asset recovery can be implemented. My consultancy research focused on the potential of community empowerment in the incorporation of victims in asset recovery. Based on personal experience in community empowerment organization and a great interest in that field, I provided my team with an insight into the concept of community empowerment and its values, potential, strengths and weaknesses. Besides my research, I was also executing the role of the completer (reviewer of the draft) and supporter of the team. I found this project to be a very useful learning experience, which gave me the opportunity to apply the knowledge I have acquired at university into the real world as well as each of us could work on our personal skills and dynamics within the group.
