      While working towards my MPH in Epidemiology, I earned a certificate in Social Determinants of Health. Additionally, I used a Cox Proportional Hazards model to generate a thesis investigating the relationship between Female Genital Schistosomiasis-specific antibody levels and transmission and acquisition of HIV among a cohort of women in Zambia.

This program enabled communication with professionals in a variety of fields and offered first-hand exposure to the modern-day application of the topics studied.

      Throughout a two-week shadowing experience, I had the opportunity to witness the work of various ophthalmologists at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. During this time, I observed surgeries, examined various eye conditions, and learned about the demands of being a doctor. In addition, I was able to inquire about personal and academic experiences from medical school interns, technicians, residents, and fellows.

      During this internship, I developed a better understanding of the structure, function, and operations of a local health department. Additionally, I became familiar with the epidemiology of Hepatitis C virus and its association with the national opioid crisis. I learned how to conduct in-depth health interviews covering sensitive and illicit activity in an unfamiliar local setting while giving special attention to cultural sensitivity and interviewee privacy.

      I worked at the Department of Veterans Affairs in the Calcium Signaling Laboratory to investigate the pathological mechanisms of Ca2+ signaling defects. During my time I observed the processes of reverse transcription, PCR, and cell sub culturing, as well as performed serial dilution and utilized Randox dye to acquire absorbance readings and generate standard curves. Additionally, I utilized ImageJ software to analyze mouse kidney tissue following exposure to staining in order to identify and quantify calcification in the tissue. Show less

      During my time at Truth Initiative, I gathered and coded qualitative and quantitative data to guide research and publication of papers pertaining to the prevalence, presentation, and influence of tobacco, nicotine, and smoking in the media. Furthermore, I contributed to research and development by composing 12+ literature reviews summarizing content on evolving research topics such as emerging findings in health, demographics, and legislature as they relate to tobacco and nicotine consumption

      From November 2022 to August 2023, I worked as a graduate research assistant for the Measuring Urban Sanitation and Empowerment (MUSE) project at Emory University. MUSE operationalizes the empowerment framework which consists of the three domains - agency, resources, and institutionalized structures. This framework is used by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and underscores power transformation and self-determination of women and girls. In this role, I audited data, extracted descriptive statistics, and performed data analysis to support the development and validation of scales and indices that measure women’s empowerment in the context of urban sanitation.       I work as a CSTE Applied Public Health Informatics Fellow at the Hawai'i State Department of Health within their Disease Outbreak Control Division. In this role I am developing an algorithm using laboratory data that will identify potentially acute cases of Hepatitis C throughout the state for investigation. Additionally, I am working alongside many others to consolidate, analyze, and share community needs data in response to the 2023 Maui Wildfires. I have also had the opportunity to engage with local communities by conducting interviews using CASPER methodology. Furthermore, I am continuing learning by pursuing a certificate in Project Management through Google and attending webinars offered by CSTE and APHA. Show less
