  During the summer period between my second and third year studies, I achieved a placement position within the project management department at Babcock International Group, at their Rosyth site during their role in producing the Queen-Elizabeth Class of Aircraft Carriers. I was given a lead role in identifying health and safety hazards on site and understanding how best to tackle them. This role involved working closely with the Heath & Safety and Procurement departments, as well as experts in various fields. My end of project deliverable came in the form of a business case that outlined the potential avenues that the Health & Safety department could invest in to best mitigate potential risks. Show less

I also investigated means of promoting the need for quality, the importance it holds across a large scale company and it's overall perception.   Secondment Role -Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager & Design Manager, I have direct management of four Lead System Engineers (Principal Engineers covering Process, HVAC, Mechanical and EC&I) and indirect management of over Senior Engineers, Designers and Technical Specialists (in Radiological Waste & Protection, Nuclear Safety Case and CS&A).I am responsible for their outputs and interfaces with other disciplines and project functions – ensuring a collaborative and cohesive approach to project delivery – presenting this at Design and Hazard Identification (HAZID) Reviews.I have delegated authority for calculations, technical substantiations and drawings – as well as ownership and escalation of technical risk. Technical governance documentation also falls within my remit, producing Technical Quality Plans & Delivery Strategies for approval by the Project and Design Authority (DA). Presentation of results to Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and the DA – guiding programme level decisions and funding.Development of Concept and Scheme Design activities (options studies, calculations, engagement with the supply chain and Learning from Experience, LFE) – presenting these at Single and Multi-Discipline Design Reviews (SDDR & MDDR). Production of engineering estimates and schedules to guide and inform future work packages as well define resource requirements. Show less Over the course of the Graduate Scheme, I have undertaken a number of placements geared towards exposing me to as many areas of the business as possible. This has covered core Engineering, Bids & Proposals as well as targeted and specific projects such as Submarine Dismantling (SDP). Engineering outputs have been mainly structural - utilising recognised analysis packages such as STAAD Pro, Mathcad and ANSYS Mechanical to conduct daily tasks. These tasks covered the preparation and checking of calculations ahead of submissions to clients as well as conducting feasibility studies into new and innovative approaches to everyday problems. My time in Engineering covered 6 months on the US Coast Guard Cutter Design Support Contract as well as 3 months with LGE working on the EcoSMRT module. Whilst in SDP (June 2018 - Dec 2018, returning April 2019), I authored Management of Change (MoC) documentation that was subject to internal and regulatory scrutiny. I am currently conducting bid work for future packages of SDP at Rosyth, whilst developing a working understanding of safety cases for ongoing and upcoming operations on site. Show less
