As a tutor for the College of Health and Human Services I worked one-on-one with students to develop personalized strategies to improve academic success in the higher-level Public Health courses. My main activities focused on building scientific writing skills through editing papers, developing structured learning activities, and providing additional resources to improve over-all communication styles. I also worked to clarify classroom concepts by establishing baseline skills and developing activities that utilized a variety of technological resources to provide my students with opportunities to apply the concepts learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. Show less As a research assistant I have assisted with the implementation of qualitative research techniques, including focus group sessions and individual interviews. I have presented research findings at national and local conferences primarily in the fields of Native American research, cancer prevention, and general health/ wellness. My research has primarily been focused on understanding Hopi perspectives on cancer and tobacco, but I have also worked with other tribes residing in the Flagstaff area through a research project examining Native American resilience. Additionally, I assisted with the organization of a diabetes awareness walk by recruiting volunteers and developing informational posters. I have also gained experience in mentoring junior research assistants by providing training in presentation techniques and qualitative analysis processes. Such processes include; coding techniques, consensus method approaches, and the utilization of analysis software (e.g. Atlas.ti). Show less

      Graduate Student Researcher

I spent seven months in Peru working with a team of student researchers under the supervision of faculty and staff from Johns Hopkins, Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, and Asociacion Benefica PRISMA. We were developing a project based in Northern Peru to explore the impact of the 2016 El Nino Southern Oscillation on the health and development of newborns. My initial roles and responsibilities on the project were to assist with the study design, develop study protocols, draft IRB proposals, and prepare grant proposals. In addition to drafting materials and documents for the study, I also played an active role in study implementation by participating in staff hiring, participant recruitment, kit preparation, and sample collection. We also set up a basic laboratory for sample preservation purposes where I assisted with laboratory activities and prepared the samples for shipment to Lima, where they would be fully analyzed by students and faculty at Cayetano University. Additionally, I conducted preliminary data entry and analysis using participant demographics and anthropometric measures. Show less
