NMUN annually draws participants from more than 130 UN Member States to address current global issues. Our experiential learning programs, including the world's largest university-level Model UN, provide students with a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research. Students benefit from our longstanding partnership with the UN and utilize simulation procedural rules developed decades ago with UNITAR. Our New York conferences culminate at UN Headquarters with thousands of students in attendance. Show less

Manufacturing is a crucial component of Swiss competitiveness in global markets. Spanning from the nano to the human scale, from health to construction, and from environmental to social needs, manufacturing is relevant to all study programmes at ETH Zurich. The question of ‘how we make things’ relates to each and every one of us at the most personal level and represents a defining feature of us as humans.

Title: Experimental Investigation of a Translucent Insulation Double Skin FacadeAbstract: The Adaptive Systems Laboratory will be constructed on the ETH HoenggerbergCampus, where a translucent insulation facade will be used. This composite facadesystem combines a translucent insulated glazing unit, an air cavity and a shading material. To evaluate the solar gain reduction potential and thermal comfort implicationsof the facade system, a series of unventilated and ventilated tests have been conductedin January and February 2019, on-site with a scale model. The facade system proves tobe effective in solar heat removal in the scale model, and can potentially achieve a 20-40% of solar heat gain reduction when applied to the building. In the end, the findingsare discussed and limitations of the experimental work are listed which reveal variousresearch opportunities in the future. Show less

Title: Priming datasets to support simulation-based product development of lightweight TABSAbstract: To reduce the enormous environmental impact of the building and construction sector, The Chair of Architecture and Building Systems is developing a lightweight thermallyactive building system (TABS), by means of high-resolution simulation with a White-box building model. This approach requires a thorough understanding of the interactionbetween the lightweight TABS and other building systems. However, the efficiency ofthis White-box model is undermined by complexity of the building project and thestochastic nature of environmental disturbances.Given that, this project strives to facilitate the product development phase of thelightweight TABS by establishing a priming framework. A global sensitivity analysisis first conducted with the White-box model, and the results are used to construct aPriming dataset. Two priming approaches, Neglect the Least (NtL) and Weigh them All(WtA), are proposed and investigated for the priming efficiency in reducing optimisationdurations. On average, the WtA method has a duration reduction potential of 19.8%,and is better than the average duration reduction of 6.6% with the NtL method. BothNtL and WtA methods are able to accelerate the optimisation process in the White-boxmodel without compromising occupant thermal comfort or increasing energy consumption of the TABS.In the end, an Occupancy Setting GUI and a Visualisation/Communication GUI aredeveloped for the White-box model. The former improves the flexibility of the occupancyschedule definition in the White-box simulation model, and the later combines interactive figures to visualise model outcomes with convenient messaging functions between the building occupants and the researchers.
