      May 2014 - Nov 2014
      Turtle Technition

The job role was to monitor the nesting population of turtles on the island (primarily Hawksbill). The project has a hotline set up to receive from calls from anyone around the island who sees a nesting female or hatchlings on the beach. The data collection from the turtles includes tagging and measuring nesting females and recording the location of their nests. The job involved lots of public interaction, as females often would nest directly in front of hotels or areas with lots of public traffic. I was also a diver in the In water program that the project runs, with over 30+ dives working for the project, the aim was to catch juvenile hawksbills on the reef to monitor growth rates and foraging habits, Lionfish eradication also took place as we were searching for the juvenile turtles. • Sint Eustatius National Parks (STENAPA)

      Jan 2015 - May 2015
      Marine Park Intern

Recently I worked for the St. Eustatius Nature Parks Association as an intern for their Marine Park. This job involved taking part in fish and coral surveys of dive sites. Carrying out in water turtle surveys, leading and helping groups of scientists from the fisheries division and Caribbean Netherlands Science Institute (CNSI), to carry out their Global Coral Reef Monitoring Network (GCRMN) surveys and general maintenance of the marine park such as cleaning lines. Lionfish eradication also too up a significant part of the workweek and dive site maintenance when it was required. Part of the job also involved working with local children of the community helping to show them the benefit of conservation. Also the organization of a Lionfish cooks off day to help promote the eating of lionfish on the island and the hunting of them by local fisherman. Show less

      Divemaster

Worked as a divemaster for Operation Wallace at their Wakatobi Indonesia station. This job involved helping and watching over scientists as they carry out their work, to teaching school kids their open water and with coral reef research.

    • James Cook University

      Nov 2015 - Jan 2016
      Research Assistant

A six week position assisting a PhD student with their research at Australia Museum's Lizard Island Research Station. During my time there we were looking at how competitive behavior in Damselfish is affected by temperature. Over the course of the six weeks we managed to get a number of experiments. This involved capturing Larval recruiting damselfish from light traps set out over the reef before night and collected the next morning. These were then put into a lab that we had set up and then trialed after a number of days acclimatizing. During my time there I also got a chance to help out on other students projects, gaining experience in using catch-nets, barrier nets and clove oil techniques to catch fish. The experiments that we carried out also were collaborations with other researchers that were there at the time. Show less

    • Operation Wallacea

      Mar 2016 - Apr 2016
      Divemaster

Four week period working for Operation Wallacea. Teaching undergrads and post grads reef surveying techniques and being responsible for dive safety.

    • Operation Wallacea

      Jun 2016 - Aug 2016
      Head Divemaster

A two month period once again working for Operation Wallacea in Indonesia. This time the role included being in charge of the monitoring project in the water. Organizing the students in the water to make sure the data collection targets of the dive are met. Measuring coral recruitment was also part of the job, taking up and replacing recruitment tiles that had been put down the previous year. These would then be taken to the lab where i would count and identify the species of coral.

    • Operation Wallacea

      Mar 2017 - Apr 2017
      Head Divemaster

A short expedition to the Hoga Island Research station with the University of Essex field trip. Duties for this role included teaching key research techniques used in situ, improving the taxonomic identification (Fish, coral and algae) of undergraduates and overseeing dive safety. During this time also had the opportunity to trial my own research focusing on coral larval enhancement.

Project Leader - Coral Reef Monitoring Program

Over the course of five expeditions to the remote Hoga Island research station within the Wakatobi National Marine Park, Indonesia i have held a variety roles. Most recently I was the project leader for the coral reef monitoring program, which is the longest running reef monitoring program in South East Asia. While performing this role is also had to simultaneously carry out data collection for my MSc dissertation research.Duties for this role included:1. Setting up the monitoring program so it is prepared for the start of the season. This included setting up scientific equipment, i.e. Camera Calibration, Camera setup, ensuring that software performs correctly on monitoring computers.2. Teaching other main scientists how to accurately record videos of quadrats for 3D modelling and how to use the 3D modelling software.3. Plan the monitoring team dives, co-ordinating the roles of volunteers.4. Teach volunteers how to collect data using the monitoring methods (i.e. 3D modelling, rugosity, benthic and invertebrate surveys).5. Record monitoring transects using a Stereo Video System to calculate fish biomass and abundance. 6. Oversee and assist with volunteer data analysis7. Analyse fish transect footage and calculate fish biomass using SEA GIS software.8. Analyse benthic video footage.9. Render 3D models and analyse these to calculate structural complexity of coral reefs.10. Analyse old coral settlement panels and re-deploy new ones.11. Ensure that all data collection and analysis was completed before the end of the season.’12. Carrying out my own MSc research, investigating the influence of the 2015 – 2016 El-Niño Surface Oscillation Event on spatial and temporal patters in coral recruitment and trialling larval enhancement as an effective method in reef restoration.
