    • Norwalk High School /Los Coyotes Middle School

      Jan 2013 - Jan 2013
      School Counseling Intern

I worked in these two schools for a full year, providing support to under-staffed counseling teams. I was able to clear a backlog of student counseling requests, thus freeing the counselors to handle the many varied demands on their time. My duties included assessing students, holding individual and group counseling sessions, documenting progress, assisting with academic study and social skills, leading academic recovery groups, and supervising new interns. My contributions included planning and running the Jump Start academic recovery program. To ensure maximum success, I researched study skills, A-G requirements and organizational tools, and the results spoke for themselves: 48% of Jump Start students improved their grades, attendance rose, and teachers reported a new focus and determination among many of the students. I was also asked to help several students with suicidal ideations. To ensure the right approach, I supplemented my existing knowledge by taking a specialist course, and was able to achieve excellent results with all the students in my care. There were no suicide attempts, and in several cases, the child was able to improve his or her home relationships. Show less
