MSc Media, Communications and International Journalism Distinction

I aimed to be a professional journalist and this course had all the right elements: a critical approach, two practical journalism projects on social justice issues, and it was delivered by the Glasgow University Media Group, my undergraduate mentors.I learned that I focus on exposing how policy and power impacts upon communities. I gained insight into this process in units exploring the psychology of political communication, and audience relationships to media output. I developed research skills devising a qualitative ethnographic study of a Scottish town. This informed my main project, writing news items, features and opinion pieces about the town’s civic society and culture for a fictional newspaper. My investigation of how the town reflected Scotland’s equality ambitions found it in need of modernisation.Executing this project developed my interview and editing skills. A strong reflective process instilled confidence that I have the ability to contribute to social justice causes. Show less

My interest in social justice issues led me to the Glasgow University Media Group at CF Mott College and their critical sociological analysis of the mass media. Lancaster University’s excellent reputation as a psychology research hub also taught me many valuable primary research skills through conducting more than 20 quantitative and qualitative research studies during my degree. These courses taught me the complexity of understanding human relationships. The associated fact checking, report writing and academic writing required to synthesise research findings between social science disciplines equipped me with transferable investigative journalism skills which I took forward into future roles and situations. Examination invigilator

I am a trained examination Invigilator for Westmorland and Furness Council. I invigilate examinations for adult learners sitting basic courses in English and mathematics, mainly refugees and people obtaining residency in the UK. These qualifications improve their demonstrable skills and help them secure their position in society. I am responsible for how the examinations I attend are delivered, working within national Joint Council for Qualifications (JCQ) guidelines. I control how an examination room is set up, who can be present, when exams begin and end, and how learners behave during the examination. I am responsible for handling examination papers with learners, and I record what happens for the awarding body.Planning and delivering an examination successfully with trained and trusted colleagues requires high level teamwork, strong attention to detail and accuracy, and many quality control skills in order to be successful to national standards. I do a lot of report writing, fact checking and system monitoring to make sure that the right people are in the right place with the right papers in a controlled environment. These essential requirements mean that I have developed exceptional organisational skills that I can deploy at short notice to meet formal goals and outcomes. It is personally rewarding to help vulnerable people improve their lives through receiving support and investment from the local community. Show less

      Academic proof reader

I proofread academic coursework produced by undergraduate and postgraduate students with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs) who are studying at universities in Scotland, including Edinburgh Napier University, Heriot-Watt University and the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI).I proofread essays, reports, research papers and dissertations. The main tasks are checking spelling, grammar, punctuation and referencing style conventions. My service allows students with SpLDs to have confidence that their learning difficulty is minimised as a factor in how their coursework is presented, allowing it to be judged on its academic merits alone. The support I provide to them increases the quality of work output, improves student productivity and generates more efficient learning and teaching. I have also proofread non-academic work for private companies and a biographer. Proofreading has developed my skills in fact checking, text editing, translation and jargon-busting, all while observing publishing conventions. I have applied these formats to my work on copy for magazines, books and radio as well as academic coursework. Show less
