    • 36th Engineer Detachment (Util). - U.S.Army

      Jun 1974 - Nov 1977
      Commander

Commanded the 36th Engineer Detachment (Util.) for two years from 1974-1977 where we provided support to the facilities engineer at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana and also Camp Atterbury, Indiana supporting President Carter's clemency program for Vietnam deserters and draft evaders. The unit had a TOE strength of 56 enlisted men and 2 officers. During our deployment we earned a unit citation from TRADOC presented by MG Forrester. During the entire tour of 2 years we were vastly over strength with all of the soldiers returning from Vietnam. Many had severe drug problems which plagued the unit and the entire army throughout my entire tenure as commander though we eliminated 17 of 87 with BCDs and Chapter 10 discharges. Of the 17 they were all either dealing in drugs or addicted to heroin. It was a very bad time for the army but it did turn around as drug testing began to be implemented and would hold up in legal proceedings. This was the most challenging work I have ever engaged in but also the most rewarding. Show less
