  • Experience

    • John Innes Centre

      Jan 2013 - Jan 2014
      Work Experience

Shortly after starting sixth form, I received a place on the John Innes Centre's competitive 'Inside Science' scheme. I spent several days at the plant and microbial science research institute receiving talks from researchers and looking around the laboratories.Subsequently, I secured a further nine work experience sessions in which I was based in the centre's media kitchen, often talking to researchers from various fields and conducting elements of their experiments. This gave me a valuable first-hand insight into working in research. Weniger anzeigen

    • Met Office

      Jul 2014 - Jul 2014
      Work Experience in Post-Processing

I undertook a week-long work experience placement at the Met Office which mainly consisted of working in with post-processing scientists, having been given the task of analysing UV data using the IDL programming language. I was able to talk to physics and mathematics graduates about their career paths which played a part in my decision to study physics. I was also given other tasks, such as working with other students to prepare and deliver a presentation about encouraging more young people to become involved in STEM careers. Weniger anzeigen

    • The University of Queensland

      Jun 2016 - Aug 2016
      Galaxy Survey Visualisation Internship

I spent the summer of 2016 at the University of Queensland developing virtual reality mobile applications to visualise galaxy redshift surveys. The apps used data from various surveys such as the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey to plot the galaxies in 3D space, effectively letting the user with an appropriate headset 'fly' around the galaxies. The placement also involved attending weekly cosmology meetings in which experts from various fields within cosmology discussed their research. This gave me an insight into the exciting world of research in physics. Weniger anzeigen

    • Deutsches Zentrum für Luft-und Raumfahrt e.V.

      Jun 2017 - Sept 2017
      DAAD RISE Research Internship

I was awarded the highly competitive DAAD RISE scholarship to undergo a summer research placement in Germany. During the internship, I worked as part of a small team at the Institut für Physik der Atmosphäre, within the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Oberpfaffenhofen site, developing a lidar system designed to detect atmospheric turbulence from aircraft.I assisted a PhD student with ground-based measurements, undertaking tasks involving data acquisition and analysis. The placement gave me experience in adapting quickly to a new environment and familiarising myself with a project in a short period of time in order to quickly integrate as part of a team. • Durham University

      Jul 2018 - Aug 2018
      Condensed Matter Physics Internship

During this computational project, I was tasked with the investigation of magnetic fields experienced by muons embedded within skyrmion spin textures. The bulk of the investigation was the development of the "MuDip" Python module (linked below), written in C++, which allows the user to investigate dipole fields within a sample.
