      Aquaculture research intern

      Responsibilities included:Leading the tilapia breeding program at the Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Tribhuvan University. Mono-sex tilapia were bred using the Asian Institute of Technology technique of feeding fry with methyl-testosterone. The aim was to produce affordable seed for distribution to local farmers who were also encouraged to learn and understand the processes involved. This community engagement centered on local/womens empowerment helping farmers become more self reliant by setting up their own hatcheries. I was also involved in various on-station and on-farm research projects such as; investigations into the optimum population density in carp polyculture, and the economic benefit of aquaculture to local communities.       Fisheries research intern

      I worked closely with professor Les Kaufman carrying out research that focused on the potential ecological-economic tradeoffs of the proposed sandlance fishery in the Gulf of Maine. The work required meeting many industry representatives and members of the scientific and management community. I also conducted biological sampling onboard fishing vessels. In the lab I prepped bird blood, feather and guano samples for stable isotope analysis with a mass spectrometer.

      This requires working and living on commercial fishing vessels for up to 14 consecutive days. The job entails liaising with fishermen, scientists and policy makers, as well as recording catch, economic and fishing gear related information. I am also required to record biological information from catch and any incidental take of protected species including marine mammals, birds and turtles.

I provide expert technical help and assistance on a range of issues from responsible seafood sourcing and supply chain/value chain management, analysis and risk assessment to Fisheries liaison and Fishing gear recycling. This required report writing for various levels of dissemination, examples include a report for the Welsh government on the use of pingers in the static gear inshore fleet and the 2018 Fish Dependence Day report for The New Economics Foundation.Auditing: Lead auditor for the Friend of the Sea and certified auditor for the Marine Stewardship Council, & Responsible Fishing Scheme standards. This included; chain of custody, wild capture, and fish oil audits. Audits involve mass balance (traceability), assessing stock health, gear type/impact et cetera.Fishing gear recycling: Providing ghost gear, fishing industry and fishing gear recycling insights. Fisheries observing: Scientific at-sea data collection, working and living on-board commercial fishing vessels, for various fisheries management organisations including ICCAT in the Mediterranean bluefin tuna fishery.
