Pangolin Award 2019 - Best Short Form Animation Jaco Van der Merwe Nov 2019 The project I worked on to win this award was for a class called 3D animation for motion graphics. The animation was based on the TV Series Riverdale. The task was to have an unfolding house that reveals itself over a few seconds. I decided to reveal Pops Dinner from the show and added 2D elements to make it pop. It was so much fun and it was also my first time using Cinema4D for the project and it came out really well.

My friend Paseka Mahlangu at the beginning of the year asked me if I wanted to do VFX on his year film. In the beginning, I was like yes for sure thinking it wasn't going to be too tough, that was until the night before his project was due I was still working on shots. What he wanted as part of the VFX was a floating dark creature from out of this world that has a plague mask on it. His film was pretty dark-themed I didn't really get some parts but he kept telling me he didn't write the script, he was just the director. During the filming phase, I wasn't able to attend all the shooting days but I managed to get there on the first day of shooting to help set them up. So for the character we got an actor to wear a cloth over his head and we put sticky tracker markers so that I could track the objects motion. The hardest part about the project was to try and remove the cloaked actor from the shot. Some shots were even impossible to track the camera movement so I had to eyeball some shots. The software that I used to create the VFX shots was Blender, Marvelous Designer, Substance Painter, FSpy, and After Effects. I had 26 shots to edit for the film and it took 3 full days (basically a whole weekend at Campus) to render over 15 PC's. Overall it was fun and it's amazing how it turned out. I just love presenting VFX shots when people start to question their own beliefs and they are like, "I didn't even know it was CGI". Show less
