Aug 2004 - Jul 2008While serving as Assistant Writing Programs Director, I helped to administer the rhetorically based curriculum of ASU’s Writing Programs, which—at the time—served over 17,000 students annually and offered over 500 courses each semester. While serving in this role, I assumed many responsibilities, including scheduling, planning, and facilitating professional development workshops and orientations for new instructors; co-revising The New Teacher Handbook and the Teaching Assistant Handbook; soliciting and editing material for Writing Notes, the program’s bi-annual newsletter; compiling and distributing pedagogical resources; reviewing syllabi to ensure that the documents met the learning outcomes for first-year composition courses; attending and participating in Writing Program Committee meetings; and shadowing the Writing Programs Director in order to learn and to assimilate the necessary skills that one must possess to successfully serve as a WPA. Aug 2008 - nowIn this role, I manage departmental budget, strategically appropriating money to add tangible resources, facilitate professional development opportunities, strengthen the work environment of the department, and fund curricular innovations. Additional duties include hiring, mentoring, and evaluating faculty; developing partnerships with external constituencies, such as school districts and businesses; conducting programmatic assessment; communicating with interested constituencies; managing course enrollments; advising traditional and transfer students; evaluating degree articulations; fostering intra-departmental partnerships; and engaging in short- and long-term personnel and curricular needs. In collaboration with the writing program director, I also oversee the university’s first-year writing program, hire part-time faculty, and help coordinate course assignments. Show less In this role, I teach a wide range of writing-intensive courses from first-year composition, ancient rhetoric, business and technical writing, multimedia writing, and capstone courses. I also teach frequently in the honors program. I also possess significant experience in curriculum development, designing new curriculum for professional writing, digital and multimedia writing, rhetoric and literature, and information literacy. Moreover, I advise and mentor students, partnering with students to conduct research and co-directing the Creative and Scholarly Endeavors program, which is Elmhurst College's rigorous program for undergraduate research. Select professional development opportunities that have been coordinated and facilitated under my leadership include faculty forums on diversity, inclusivity, and equity; retention and student persistence; Universal Design for Learning; and platforms for instructional technology. Professional development courses that have been created and facilitated under my leadership include the following: CST 101: Teaching Online at Elmhurst University; CST 500: Developing and Teaching Resilient Courses; CST 505: Integrating Online Technology Tools to Support Active Learning; and CST 510: Advanced Resilient Course Design. Moreover, I facilitate orientation sessions for part-time faculty and coordinate forums where faculty share their research with the community. In my director role, I also co-direct the university’s Creative and Scholarly Endeavors (CASE) program, a robust undergraduate research and mentorship experience.
