Developed writing skills that were important in later years in communications and related work. Commenced as a science writer but later on graduated to do business writing. I ended my career in this newspaper as the Business Editor. In this post, I was exposed to management as well as editorial work because I led the Business Desk.  Observed strict deadlines and was responsible for the contents in the business news pages. I had to delegate work to other journalist and prepare work schedules for them. Here I was exposed to management functions such as planning, organizing and coordinating.   • As the Assistant Director of IBSL, my tasks were mainly centred on publications and business development which involved improving the communication services with the students and the membership, which was over 10,000. • Was involved in operations which included planning, organizing and coordinating activities and developing marketing strategies. Managed an Advertising Budget of over Rs.3 mn per year. • I headed the marketing/advertising functions of IBSL and provided leadership that helped to improve efficiency and effectiveness in these spheres of activity. From a public relations perspective, I developed strategies to improve IBSL’s relationships with its members, students and its public. • Edited and produced of the Bankers Journal, which was the official organ of the institute that is circulated to its entire membership and student body.    Advised ERTAP on strategies that could be adopted when disseminating economic information to people living below the poverty line in Sri Lanka.  Conducted studies and wrote reports about the country’s economic issues, especially with regard to the productivity/efficiency of the state’s Power and Energy and Banking sectors.  Under ERTAP, I worked for the Strategic Enterprise Management Agency (SEMA), which was a state agency involved in formulating strategies to improve the efficiency of the country’s state sector; and the Reconstruction and Development Agency (RADA), which was set up after the December 2004 Tsunami to monitor and assist reconstruction and development activities in Sri Lanka.
