I have 30+ years experience importing textiles, jewelry and handicrafts for sale in my two retail stores in the USA as well as on our websites and in our eBay and Amazon stores. My activities include sourcing and buying in several different counties especially Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Mexico and Guatemala. This buying includes the design and manufacture of goods as well the discovery of one of a kind rare items through sometimes exhaustive and remote exploration.I am conscientiously familiar with local customs and business habits and am able to effectively communicate. Good importing ethics means developing relationships and trust. Many of these relationships date to the 1980s.Importation also means getting cargo to its' final destination. Much of my experience includes choosing the proper shipping method. This means analyzing the safest, most efficient way to secure the particular goods in question and overseeing the transfer of the goods from the suppliers to the freight forwarder. I have shipped by every possible method from the simplest Postal means to Couriers to air freight and to 20 and 40 foot containers. I ship goods by air or sea depending on the best choice for the country the goods are coming from and for the nature of the goods themselves.Finding a worthy, scrupulous shipper means time spent meeting cargo companies face to face as it is impossible to overstate the importance of not having valuable goods arrive damaged or short due to careless packing or to have delays and seizures due to the lack of the proper, formal Customs paperwork being completed correctly.Employing a diligent broker is the final skill required to insure that cargo will successfully clear Customs in a timely manner so as to secure the goods without costly delays and to be able to bring the goods to market in a timely manner. This means coordinating Customs clearance, retrieval of the goods from the Customs bond, transfer to a domestic shipper and final delivery. Show less
