The paper analyses my experiences as a woman of African descent in the West, working as a journalist and researcher engaging Sudan. It deconstructs discourses on indigenous, African and non-European peoples and women, and historic continuities that guide today's news media, researchers and scholars. I use decolonial methods to understand the roots of Western knowledge production, and centre authors and principals historically absent or marginalized by imperial systems, narratives and accounts. My portfolio is a dialectical project and uses an intersectional approach to explore the contradictions between the confident, extensive and rich self-determination of African peoples, and the ongoing ideological constructions of Africans.
