      Feb 2010 - Dec 2010
      Process engineer

For a year, I cooperated in the development, trouble-shooting and execution of pharmaceutical-grade pilot to full scale production protocols in a cGMP environment. I was responsible for the purification procedures of viruses to produce a vaccine against Hepatitis A (Epaxal). The techniques used for executing the tasks were (ultra)filtration, ultracentrifugation and inactivation. I planned, performed and documented batch runs. Compilation and maintenance of cGMP related documentation (SOP’s, production protocols, batch records, etc.) were also an important part of the function. Most of the tasks were performed under BSL2 conditions. Show less

Title: "Engineering Microbial Fuel Cell Biofilm Communities". PhD undertaken under the supervision of Dr. Richard Weld (Lincoln Agritech Ltd.), Dr. Gavin Lear (University of Auckland), Dr. Phil Novis (Landcare Research, Lincoln). My research advances our understanding of formation and selection of electro-active anodic biofilms. I am investigating the potential of these anodic biofilms for electricity production and biosensing applications. I am also exploring the potential of photosynthetic cathodic biofilms powered by microorganisms such as cyanobacteria, which have been collected in New-Zealand.Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have potential to produce electricity in a sustainable manner, without badly affecting the environment. Interest in MFCs has considerably increased in the last decade, especially for the treatment of wastewater.Member of the International Society for Microbial Electrochemistry and Technology (ISMET).
