      Earned a Masters in Biology at The University of New Mexico-Albuquerque while conducting my research at the Los Alamos National Laboratory.My graduate projects included:1) Developing a promoter library for an industrially-valuable algae strain (Nannochloropsis salina). This will improve genome-editing capabilities by creating more reliable promoters to drive gene expression, and can be expanded to other algal strains. 10 constituitive promoters, and a handful of inducible (light, nitrogen deprivation) promoters will be verified.2) CRISPR-directed knock-out/knock-in of photoreceptor genes in various algal species. Preliminary results on the model alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, have exhibited improved growth from the KO of the phototropin photoreceptor. Utilizing the CRISPR-Cas system, we aim to improve biomass production of industry strains. Additionally, the Neochrome photoreceptor responds to light in the red/far-red range of the visible spectrum -- exhibited in low-light self-shading conditions or during dawn/dusk. We are using the CRISPR system to insert this gene (originating in ferns) into industrial algae strains. Improved growth under non-optimal conditions should result from this expansion of its light-harvesting range. Show less
