A generic layered architecture is provided, encompassing a critical analysis and classification of the research that has been done in the last few years and highlighting the potential of the decentralized ledger systems in different areas and use cases. Furthermore, a guideline is proposed, emphasizing the necessary steps that needs to be considered for a successful design and decentralization of existing businesses in order to maximize their potential.The guideline and the generic layered architecture have been successfully used to provide decentralized solutions for two challenging traditional systems (IoT and Energy Markets), demonstrating the potential of a blockchain system to overcome the shortcomings and enrich the capabilities of the existing Smart Grid systems.
