Winner of the Recon Challenge Gunny Jakes Sep 2004 I was awarded one of the top two Marines that took part in the Recon Challenge. It was a week long challenge that consisted of a tremendous amount of team work, long distance running, long distance swimming, long distance finning, land navigation, night land navigation, 10k rucksack run in full combat gear, test over our SOP's as Recon Marines while being awake for over 24 hours, and the recon indoctrination which consisted of 30 min of treading water in our camouflage uniforms in a tight group, 500 meter swim, 50 meter brick swim, 50 meter underwater crossover, and the USMC PFT immediately afterwards. we also practiced our survival techniques by only getting one MRE (meals read to eat) a day, when we ran out we had to catch our own food and start a fire without a lighter or matches.
