      Jul 2019 - Aug 2019
      Student Trainee

Participated in the 43rd edition of Alpbach Summer School. The topic was 'Geophysics from Space using Micro- or Nano-Satellite Constellations'. The aim of the summer school was to propose ideas for new space missions to observe Earth's gravitational and magnetic field from space. Attended lectures on various aspects of space science and engineering and was a participating member of the Orange team. Our mission proposal was to study the dynamics of the Earth's core using a constellation of small satellites. It is a continuation of the dataset provided by the SWARM mission, additionally providing direct measurement of ionospheric current densities, enabling more accurate removal of external magnetic field contributions from our measurements than current models. More information about our proposal can be found in the report and powerpoint presentation attached. Team Orange won oscars for the best science case and presentation! Weniger anzeigen

Mission Design - Post Alpbach Event

Participant in the Post Alpbach Event. During the event, we further developed the GRAVL mission designed during the Alpbach Summer School using the concurrent engineering approach at the ESA Academy concurrent design facility, Belgium. I worked on the instruments team. The event culminated in a presentation of our project to the staff at the ESA site in Redu. The work from this project has since been presented at EGU 2020.

    • Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies

      Jun 2020 - Sept 2020
DIAS Astronomy and Astrophysics Summer Intern

Worked as a summer intern at DIAS with Dr. Caitriona Jackman whose research focuses on planetary magnetospheres. I helped to design a "Machine Learning for Space Science Workshop" aimed at incoming PhD students. Additionally, I worked on data from the Cassini mission at Saturn and analysed magnetic reconnection events. I also developed further the public outreach and engagement activities at Dunsink Observatory. Some outreach projects I worked on included the creation of a space themed escape room and a movie about astrophysicists at DIAS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAIIsVZR3qw&t=433s). The enormous heat generated by the gravito-thermal processes creating the inner core causes the outer core iron-alloy convection out of which the dynamo process generates the terrestrial magnetic field. This magnetic field testifies that we inhabit a living planet. Many important aspects are not yet understood on how core processes work, how Orpheus, the boss of the underworld operates. The proposed mission represents a most advanced new concept to unravel Orpheus secrets. Combining long-term measurements, lasting for more than two solar cycles, with a new curlometer configuration, allowing estimating ionospheric current flows, significantly improve to characterize the structure and dynamics of the core magnetic field. The ORPHEUS mission proposal has the scientific potential to further our understanding of planet Earth. Show less
