Objective: To analyse railway maintenance data to develop a predictive model that forecasts whether a rail segment will experience a break within the next 30 days. The project aimed to enhance railway infrastructure maintenance by leveraging machine learning and data engineering techniques.Key components of the project include:• Data Pipeline Development: Built end-to-end data pipelines using Azure and Databricks to extract, process, and transform railway sensor readings and historical rail break data.• Feature Engineering & Selection: Experimented with various techniques to identify the most influential factors, such as acceleration, temperature, and track conditions, using filter methods and statistical tests.• Model Development: Implemented machine learning models, including Random Forest, Gradient Boosting, and MLP, to predict rail failures. Conducted extensive hyperparameter tuning to optimize performance.• Explainability & Interpretability: Applied SHAP, LIME, and Counterfactual explanations to understand model decisions and enhance trust in predictions.• Evaluation & Leaderboard Performance: The models were evaluated using F1-score and submitted to the Insight Factory Leaderboard, with a goal of exceeding 65% accuracy.• Working in a Team: Collaborated with a team of data scientists and engineers, coordinating tasks, sharing insights, and refining models through peer feedback and discussion. Actively took part in the daily stand-ups and bi-weekly sprints.• Progress Tracking & Reporting: Maintained weekly reports detailing project progress, strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. This project contributed to predictive maintenance strategies, helping railway operators proactively address potential failures and improve safety and efficiency.
