Through selected coursework and advanced research, students may specialize in a wide range of flexible concentrations."I chose to tailor my masters degree program to focus on wildlife ecology and wildlife-habitat relationships, especially those in forested habitats. With that, I conducted my thesis research in the Lake County Forest Preserve District, a non-profit county land trust in the Chicago Metropolitan Area. I modeled factors influencing site occupancy of breeding birds, herptiles, mesocarnivores, and small mammals, 23 species in all. I used standard wildlife sampling techniques and several sources of GIS data to blend both field and remotely sensed data in an analysis of wildlife-habitat relationships. In doing so, I achieved a thorough knowledge of wildlife ecology, GIS practices, habitat management strategies, and inter-agency cooperation. Show less

      BS Biological Sciences

"University of Wisconsin Parkside is a high quality, world-class educational institution. They have a reputation for outstanding preparation of students for careers in biology and molecular biology. They are a smaller institution and students' educational experience can best be described as hands-on. Students benefit from professors who take a personal interest and build lasting relationships. This one-on-one attention is the educational foundation that launches successful careers."… Show more "University of Wisconsin Parkside is a high quality, world-class educational institution. During my time as an undergraduate at UWP, I was continually encouraged by the biological sciences faculty to go above and beyond class requirements and was given the resources to do so. Their enthusiasm and support ultimately convinced me to pursue research and graduate school. Courses offered were well-rounded and practical which prepared me for a successful and diverse future in the wildlife sciences. Show less

      Wildlife Biologist Intern

✔ Managed and coordinated the daily trapping and inventory of an aquatic turtle assemblage in northeastern Illinois.✔ Attached, maintained, and monitored radio transmitters on hatchling, head-started, juvenile, and adult Blanding’s turtles. Conducted daily VHF telemetry recording turtle movement, home range size, habitat/vegetation selection, and year-round behavior.✔ Conducted experimental Blanding’s turtle nest depredation study and assisted with data analysis of home range, habitat selection, movement, and behavior using GIS platforms and standard statistics (e.g., MCP, KDE).✔ Prepared and submitted annual reports outlining project status, activity reports, and species inventories to the department of natural resources of Illinois and Wisconsin. • Lake County Forest Preserve District

      Jun 2010 - May 2011
      Wildlife Monitoring Program Lead Technician

✔ Employed standard techniques to survey herptiles (live-traps, coverboards), breeding birds (timed point counts), mesocarnivores (remote cameras, scent stations), and small mammals (live-traps) on 55 forest preserves throughout 12,000 ha as part of a county-wide wildlife monitoring program.✔ Co-coordinated and managed Lake County’s Blanding’s turtle (Emydoidea blandingii, state endangered) head-start program by collecting adult turtles for artificial egg deposition, growing-out hatchling turtles, planning hatchling releases, and protecting and monitoring wild nests.✔ Prepared annual reports summarizing the activities carried out through the head-start program and inventory reports of animals captured during the wildlife monitoring program.✔ Managed, coordinated, and supervised daily activities for 1-3 field technicians at any given time.
