2010 NCAA Career in Sports Forum
May 2010 - May 2010Selected ParticipantDuring the summer of 2010 following my junior year at Denison, I was chosen to take part in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum in Indianapolis, Indiana. As a result of the selective application process, three hundred and ninety-one student-athletes were selected from NCAA institutions throughout the United States to attend the forum. The criterion for selection was based on leadership qualities and interest in self-development that will affect positive change in the future. Throughout the four-day event I learned a great deal about the different careers in sports specifically about those within collegiate athletics. Participants were able to choose either a coaching track or an administrator track based on their career goals. I chose the administrator track, which allowed me to take part in several workshops and seminars within the areas of academics, communications, compliance, facilities, life skills, marketing, and promotions. The forum strongly reinforced my interest in the opportunities afforded individuals in the sports industry to make a difference in the lives of many young aspiring athletes. Show less

May 2010 - Jun 2010Selected ParticipantDuring my junior year of college, after a highly competitive application process, I was selected as one of about 18 students to participate in Denison University’s Organizational Studies program. In this program I was able to apply my liberal arts education to various post-graduate careers. As part of the program, I participated in a series of core courses related to organizational behavior, a career-focused internship, and an intensive month long series of seminars and workshops during the summer session. Over the four-week summer session we traveled to Chicago, New York City, and Cincinnati to meet with Denison alumni from a wide range of successful organizations who talked to us about the operations of their companies. This opportunity introduced me to the language and fundamental principles of ethical organizational behavior, leadership, group processes and decision-making, marketing, finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship. This enabled me to interpret the problems faced by organizations in both the private and public sectors. In addition, I was able to consult local organizations along with fellow participants to research and analyze problems they faced, come up with creative solutions, and present our results. Show less
