      Class of 2026 Student/Mentee

Minds Matter is a highly-competitive, rigorous three-year college access and mentorship program that connects high-achieving, low-income high school students from underserved communities in Los Angeles to the skills and opportunities needed to apply to and succeed in college. Minds Matter Southern California strives to provide a wide support system and to cultivate the sense of community and camaraderie among its students— many of them first-generation college students— as they navigate higher education.Throughout the three years of high school in which I participated in Minds Matter, I:• Learned valuable leadership skills, cultivated critical thinking and learned how to approach challenging discourse, developed an aptitude for public speaking, refined my essay-writing abilities, and —with the guidance of my wonderful mentors— gained insight into future career prospects in technology and all the universities that I could potentially attend.• Learned about personal finance and navigating college financial aid, career networking, and internship researching skills, all of which are taught by volunteer mentors coming from a variety of fields and industries.• Enrolled and successfully completed a computational biology course as an attendee of UCSD Academic Connections Summer Program in 2021; learned about basic statistics and methods in data collections, as well as the use of predictive modeling programs to track the spread of viruses. • Qoom

      Sept 2020 - Sept 2021
      Qoom Creator

The Qoom Creator Program is a technical mentorship program where high school and university students with interest in computer science and programming are provided with the resources and mentorship to bring their creative ideas to life and develop community-centered projects to be hosted on the Qoom platform. Throughout my time in the program I collaborated with other Qoom creators to develop a variety of projects, including a time-zone converter to efficiently schedule meetings in a virtual workspace and a time management study tool. For my final project with the program, I worked with a partner to build Cranial Check, an accessible online medical symptom checker tool for head and eye conditions, in response to the spike in high overuse of computers for school and work during the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown. In the development of this project, I:• Thoroughly researched common chronic head and eye conditions and overlapping symptoms with project partner, sourcing medical journals and blogs, in order to develop our symptom survey with accuracy. • Primarily designed front-end interface of Cranial Check website, utilized HTML, CSS, and Figma software to construct and implement a design for a condition glossary, symptom survey, main menu, and results page on personalized user interface and dashboard. • Utilized JavaScript and the Qoom database to develop a point-based formula that used survey questions to calculate the likelihood of a user having a certain condition based on their selected symptoms. Modeled survey results and suggested treatments using DOM manipulation and data queries from Qoom database.• Implemented a posture checker feature using Google Teachable Machine to create an instance of Google's pre-existing image classification model and training it on image data of healthy and bad posture.
