4 Year sandwich degree in Costume and Textiles. Covering all elements of study, design and craft of costumes for a character. Underlying this is an understanding of practical limitations such as budget, reusability and comfort. Then following that we studied both embroidery and print disciplines and in the second year we had to choose a specialism. I chose print because many of the skills used in the print room are similar to other arts I love, like painting. It was also very experimental and hands on, allowing you to get started and play with the outcome which resulted in many unexpected results. This is what I love about textiles and how open you can be. Finally we studied everything around measuring, fitting, drafting and making garments for different needs. I enjoyed it, but found it challenging. My experienecs in the sandwich year are listed above too. Show less

Planning and writing essays around particular debates, and also managing my own choice of topic. I was proud to get my best mark for the EMA (end of module assessment) which was a discussion of the global connections between Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries, and the so-called "New World" of Central and South America through the artist Francisco de Zurbaran and a travellers chest, used to transport goods back from what is now Mexico.I found some of the theory took a few readings as I had been away from academia for a while, but absolutely loved the course. Designing and making costumes for a specific character for a Uni production of Cabaret. Measuring and fitting a costume to an actor and constructing garments for the stage.

    • Digital You, Ailsa Windsor

      Feb 2013 - Jul 2013
      Textiles Designer and Maker

Helping assist a Masters student with her major project for a short film about digital identities. Moodboarding and swatching potential ideas for the characters, then experimenting in the print room before making the final textiles.

    • Dirty Laundry Theatre

      Aug 2013 - Dec 2013
      Costume designer and maker

Another short term opportunity whilst studying. Dirty Laundry put a call out for costume designers and makers for their production of Woman Scorned, a modern retelling of the myth of Medea. I adored the story and the way they were reimagining it so we had a lot of fun designing for the characters and added elements of hand embroidery and breaking down to match the themes.

    • Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery

      Aug 2013 - Apr 2014
      Assistant to Costume Conservator

I absolutely loved my time at RAMM and the National Trust. I was shadowing Shelley Tobin, head of Costume, and learned a lot about how Conservation in heritage and the arts works. I discovered things I thought I would never enjoy, but loved, and put my existing craft and writing skills to play too. I was particularly interested in how items are acquired and exhibitions arranged and still have an interest in this to this day. From this internship, I realised how much I love art history and conservation and went on to study further with the Open University, where I hope to take my studies further. Show less

    • Yorkshire Sculpture Park

      Aug 2013 - Oct 2013
      Instillation Artist (Costume and Textiles)

This opportunity was offered by Huddersfield University as a chance to make costume and textiles in a more artistic way so I jumped at it. We chose to focus on industrialism, especially in the production of textiles and juxtaposed contemporary images with 18th century childrens clothes. It was a small team of us and we worked well together, producing something interesting and out of our comfort zone.

    • CuteCircuit

      Mar 2014 - Apr 2014
      Fashion Internship

During my time at CuteCircuit I learned a lot about how a small fashion company is run, how integral each member of the team is, and how you have to always think on your feet. They are doing interesting things in the crossover between art and technology and opened my eyes to what could be achieved.

    • Mulberry England

      Jun 2016 - Feb 2020
      Craftsperson

While I was at Mulberry I picked up many different skills namely speed and precision (which is not something you gain by stitching alone). Alongside this I brushed up on my attention to detail and quality control as the standards are very high in the world of designer. Other things I learned included all the different elements that go into making luxury leather goods (bags), including cutting, skiving, gluing and working in a production team. It was invaluable in terms of managing production, maintaining speed and quality. Show less

    • RAYJAC LIMITED

      Feb 2020 - Jan 2023
      Sewing Machinist

I was a Sewing Machinist, responsible for all elements of creating industrial jackets for piping. During my time here I learned how to pattern draft to spec, cut and prepare jackets and stitch all kinds of shapes and sizes. The items are bespoke so every day could be different and we have learned to adapt and have creative solutions to hand. We worked with a variety of industrial fabrics and threads, including sillicon, silver, kevlar and waterproof fabrics and threads. The team is small so we shared responsibility of the day to day running of the workshop, including cleaning, keeping on top of orders and managing deliveries/taking calls. Show less
